This series of three lacquer paintings combine the ancient form of red seal calligraphy with earthy colors and depictions of vessels – two with pomegranates. In China, the pomegranate is often found in artistic representations because the fruit contains many seeds, making it a symbol of fertility. We like to interpret these three paintings as evocative of three Cycles of Life.

Cycle of Life I depicts the time of life before parenthood when all the seeds of life are contained within, waiting to burst forward.

Cycle of Life II evokes the period of fertility and creation when the seeds of life are being actively propagated.

Cycle of Life III represents the period of rest after fertility, when the joy of creation is replaced with the time of quiet wisdom.
