Josef Ohayon's exposure to the arts began at an early age. When he was six, his family emigrated from one ancient land---Casablanca, Morocco---and settled a the site of another: Israel. There, he worked in his family's printing business, learning applications of color and graphics. After his military service, he farmed his own land near the Jordanian border. He also started developing an agricultural monitoring device, only to discover a surprising new property of an elemental metal used in the device's manufacturing process. It turned out that water applied at a very high pressure twisted the suddenly malleable metal. Ohayon realized that his very same process could be used to create functional art that transcended the limitations of conventional furniture and sculpture. He designed metal sofas with the comfort of fabric and found the inspiration to craft metal vases embodying an almost primordial vibrancy. His later works of pitchers and housings for lighting further extend his artistic vision by melding elegant, clean lines with seemingly infinite arrays of coarse textures. This artist is known to the world simply as JOJO. His quiet life in Ein Tamar, far from the madding crowds of the big city, yet near the enthralling landscapes that surround the Dead Sea, suggests a genesis for his inventions. In purchasing a work by JOJO, you are recognizing not just his self-taught mastery, but also the timeless value of the sources for his innovations. Here is a creator who, in every way, transcends the traditional to produce bold works at the forefront of functional and modern art.
